This is a de-limber. It is used on
forest products harvesting, and specifically is used to remove
branches from trees where they are felled. This leaves the waste
bi-mass on the forest floor, which aides in soil maintenance.
The project involved making a large
ugly machine palatable to buyers, who pay over $400,000 for
these machines. The orange machines in these images are what we
started with. the white machine is the finished product
The design assignment included
resolving ergonomics, identifying features to improve operator
comfort and performance, improve visibility, add lighting,
enhance safety, and generally bring the aesthetics up to snuff.
The finished product manufacturing process remained unchanged,
while the final machine being produced changed dramatically.
